Reality and Illusion in Shakespeares Hamlet - Appearance versus Realit

Appearance versus Reality in Hamlet   â Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, is a story of a youthful ruler who must discover reality with respect to his dad's passing. All through the play, the major subject of appearance versus the truth is consistent. Most of the primary characters hole up behind shroud of falsehoods and trickeries, clouding reality to the point that about nothing of their real selves are noticeable. The maze of trickiness is curved to such an extent that solitary Hamlet knows about reality, and simply because the phantom of his dad uncovered it to him. Hamlet, Polonius, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, and the King Claudius are all piece of this hover of misleading.   â â â Hamlet, while more veritable than the rest, carries himself into the duplicities with his faked madness. At any rate for this situation there is an advantageous legitimization; his every activity and word is accounted for straightforwardly to Claudius by Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Polonius or any number of others faithful to Claudius. His craziness is a cunning technique for insurance; he will be disregarded and free as long as he isn't viewed as a danger. In spite of the fact that utilizing a lot of misdirection, Hamlet's erroneousness is little in contrast with that of Polonius, the illustrious collaborator.   â â â Polonius is fixated on anticipating the pictures of a trusting and liberal dad and an insightful man generally speaking, controlling or deluding everybody conceivable to serve his own plan. One way he endeavors to improve his picture is the point at which he over and again waxes beautiful and conveys extensive talks with respect to life to his youngsters. A case of this is the point at which he is giving Laertes his approval to leave for France and gets done with this hopeful counsel, This most importantly: to thine own self be valid./And it must follow... ... The Amusement Park: Past, Present and Beyond Marcenia Milton Monroe College Monday February 29, 2016 Abstract Amusement parks are in the umbrella of the hospitality industry. One of its goals is to provide entertainment for all guests. It has been that way since the beginning and has been advancing ever since. If anyone had to say it the best, it will have to be the father of the amusement parks, Walt Disney. â€Å"Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy† (GoodReads). Nutrition And Athletics Free Essays

Good Nutritional practices play a very critical role in the physical performance of not only human beings but also all living creatures. To excel in any endurance physical activity, all the body systems must perform since the bioenergetics’ functions of the muscles has to be sustained in order to function at peak levels. (Berning, J. We will write a custom essay sample on Nutrition And Athletics or any similar topic only for you Order Now and E. Hultman. 1972) Energy providing nutrients, carbohydrates, lipids (which are also known as fats), and proteins provide fuel for the bioenergetics reactions, vitamins and minerals on the other hand speeds up the rate the bioenergetics’ reaction (acts as a catalysts); where water acts as a solvent for all these reactions and also serves as a cooling agents for the body from the heat which is produced by the bioenergetics reactions. (Bobb, A et al. 1969) All these nutrients are needed in appropriate quantities so as to enable the body function efficiently especially during exercise or sport. (Singh,V. N. 1992) Food is the major source of all these nutrients although sometimes nutritional supplements are used during critical times especially when a performer needs urgent nourishment either through oral or through introversions (IV) infusion. The gastro intestinal tract (GIT) helps to break down this food into smaller components (digests) so as to ease the process of absorption. The body cells then utilize the absorbed nutrients for all metabolic reactions in the body including energy production. (Asterita M. F, 1986) Studies show that the foods eaten today serves as a body part in the future therefore nutrition is very essential. This paper discusses the dietary requirements of an athlete, especially essential nutrients with regard to their forms, functions, food source, dietary recommendations and deficiency risks. BODY Athletes like all intensive /endurance physical activities is a high energy consuming exercise therefore diet is very critical and very essential for the health and performance of an athlete. However, Nutritional requirements for an athlete vary from one athlete to another depending on the time taken during training and actual performance. (Brouns, F. 1993) The aims of good nutrition in an athlete according to, (Buskirk, E. R 1997) include: o To help the athlete recover from performance or training o To prepare the athlete for performance or training o And to maintain the level of performance or training of an athlete Therefore unless an athlete is well nourished he/she may not exploit his/her full potential. This nutrition involves a balanced diet which is regular and with the required amount of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water. The individual nutrient requirements and the deficiency side effects include: Carbohydrate Carbohydrate is a very important source for an athlete. It is required to help the athlete sustain the high level of the activity and to prevent muscle cramps and fatigue. (Consolazio, C. F, and H. L. Johnson. 1972). Carbohydrate in the body is stored in the muscles and the liver as glycogen and these stores must be continuously replenished. (Burke, . L. M, et al. 1991) Research shows that a person can store enough glycogen in the body to help him/her sustain an exercise for a period between 90 minutes to 120 minutes but however taking a diet low in carbohydrates can reduce this time to less than 60 minutes.  (Chen, J . D. 1993) Recommended carbohydrate An athlete is supposed to consume a meal containing between 7-10g of carbohydrates per kilograms, body weight of the individual athletes per day (7-10g/kg/bwt/day) consequently he/she should consume a pre-exercise meal 1-4 hours prior to the event and the meal should contain 1-4g of carbohydrate per kilogram body weight, however if the exercise is prolonged, one has to consume a carbohydrate during the exercise and these should be 30-60 carbohydrate per hour. If the athlete is to participate in frequent activities he/she needs to consume in immediate post –exercise carbohydrate which is meant to aid in recovery in readiness for another performance (Bucci . L . 1995). He also says that this meal should contain 50-1000g of carbohydrate after every two hour until the normal meals resume. Signs of inadequate intake according to (Buxbaum, R, and L . J . M icheli) include: o Muscle heaviness o Lack of energy to train o Inability to concentrate for an extended period of time especially during an event o Poor recovery between training sessions Generally the carbohydrate requirement for an athlete will depend on the body weight, height, training, regime e. g. (Intensity and duration), Type of training and the gender of the athlete. Protein Requirements Protein is needed by an individual since it is involved in the building and repair of muscles and tissues the red blood cells, hair, finger nails, as well as synthesis of hormones. It is also required so as to reduce chances of development of iron deficiency anemia and improving the healing process incase of an injury or disease. (American Dietetic Association and Canadian Dietetic Association, 1993). They further say that adolescent and adult athletes require 0. 6-0. 9g of proteins per kilogram per body weight per day (0. 6-0. 9g of protein/kg/bwt/day). During an intensive or enduring exercise energy production takes priority over tissue building however very little proteins is used as fuel when calorie supply is adequate in the body studies reveal that the best nutrients to provide fuel in athletic are carbohydrates and fats but they are inadequate or depleted gluconeogenesis takes place (process of converting non-carbohydrate sources such as Proteins to carbohydrates) to convert proteins in carbohydrates so as to provide energy. Proteins are the major sources of nitrogen in the body and nitrogen wastes produced after protein digestion require a lot of energy to eliminate which may otherwise be used during the event however nitrogen wastes are minimal when carbohydrates are adequate. Vitamins and Minerals. Fats are divided into two classes, first Fat soluble vitamins which include Vitamin A, D, E and K and second water soluble Vitamins which include Vitamin C and B complex vitamins. The body requires all these vitamins in amounts exceeding the recommended Dietary allowances especially in endurance exercises such as athletics but however care should be taken on fat soluble vitamins since if taken excess they may lead to toxicity which is detrimental to the health and eventually performance, but studies have shown that even if vitamins can be taken without conditions they do not contribute directly to the performance of an athlete, however, the reactions which the body uses to provide it with energy are controlled by chemicals which are mostly made up of vitamins and minerals that the body can only obtain from the diet.  (Allan ,J . G ,and K . A ,Overbaugh). Minerals on the other hand are very important in the health and performance of an athlete in that they act as catalysts and hence speeds the rate of reactions of energy provisions in the body. These minerals include calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, sulphur, potassium, sodium and chloride. It is therefore advisable that foods hat are high in vitamins and minerals especially fruits, green leafy vegetables, carrots as well as high biological valve proteins should be high in an athlete’s diet. Fats Fats are important sources of energy in the body. The body stores fat in the adipose tissue and under the skin it is the last to be used by the body incase of starvation or depletion of carbohydrates and fat stores in the body. However, in endurance sports especially athletics, excess body fat will often be detrimental to performance. This is because the increase in fat stores consequently raises the body weight and also the body uses a lot of energy to break down fats into fats acids so that it can be used.  (Chavez A, C et al, 1969) Excess fat in the body is not only caused by consumption of high fat diet but also by consuming large amounts of carbohydrates especially simple and sweet carbohydrates since they cause fat storage. Athletes are advised to consume high complex / high glycemic index carbohydrates since it releases energy slowly to the cells thus there is reduced fat storage. However athletes should eat smaller meals than non-sports people but in frequent intervals. Water Water is a non-calorific food because it does not give any calories to the body but it is extremely necessary. This is because the larger percentage about (60%) of the body is water and even small amounts of dehydration can have major effects on the performance of an individual. (Bobb, A, D . et al 1969) Water helps the body by protecting it against overheating (cools the body) and also as a means (blood) of transport for most substances in the body. Dehydration is very fatal in sports since it leads to reduced ability to exercise in the heat and also reduced mental skills such as concentration and decision making. Consumption of water is the key to optimal hydration but fluids such as diluted fluid juice or weak squash drinks after can help optimize hydration. While exercising athletes are often weighed before and after a session so that the fluid that has been lost can be replaced quickly. (Berning. J. R and S . N. Steen. 1991) Conclusion For excellence in exercise and sports, all body system must perform efficiently especially the muscles. This can only be enhanced through good nutritional practices. The body gets all the nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids/fats, vitamins and minerals) from the food on consumer or nutrient supplements. Athletes require higher amounts of carbohydrates than other nutrients since they are the major sources of energy: however, other nutrients can be converted to carbohydrate through the process of gluconeogenesis incase there is inadequate carbohydrates or there is depletion of carbohydrate in the liver and muscles where it is stored in the form of glycogen. Water which is defined as a non calorific food is very important in an athlete since the highest percentage of the body is water and even small amounts of dehydration can have significant effects on the performance (both sporting and mental performance). Additionally high fluid levels in the body help to protect it against overheating and also provide the means (blood) of transport for most substances in the body. The body’s digestive system breaks down food into smaller components which are easily absorbed by the body cells and tissues and utilized during an exercise. Diet therefore plays a very important part in the health and performance (both physical and mental performance) of an individual and should be taken seriously. Operations and Process Management Principles and Practice for Strategic Impact Essay Example

Operations and Process Management: Principles and Practice for Strategic Impact Essay PROJECT MANAGEMENT Project management can be said to be the management or control of a unique set of co-ordinated activities, with definite starting and finishing points, undertaken by an individual or team to meet specific objectives within defined time, cost and performance parameters. There exist various methods for managing projects. The most common which is most suitable for large size projects is PRINCE2 Pons (2008). New Product Development (NPD) New product development (NPD) is an important organisational activity since it provides future business opportunity for the organisation. It involves the executives of an organisation taking risks in achieving specific aims and objectives. The process of developing a new product needs considerable efforts from the employees dedicated to it. Sometimes, new product development could involve a complete change and this could bring about having to carry out quite a number of individual projects. Customers’ needs identification: Women want to spend less in acquiring sanitary pads for each month. Some women avoid spending so much on packs of sanitary pads each month by wearing each sanitary pad for hours longer than normal. This is bad for personal hygiene but in most case cannot be avoided due to the unequal income distribution in the economy. Quality evaluation of existing products: the normal sanitary pads are good at absorbing substance and keeping the users dry but each pack of sanitary pads contains a small number of individual sanitary pads that a single sanitary pad is often not enough for most women during their monthly menstrual cycle. We will write a custom essay sample on Operations and Process Management: Principles and Practice for Strategic Impact specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Operations and Process Management: Principles and Practice for Strategic Impact specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Operations and Process Management: Principles and Practice for Strategic Impact specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer Objectives of new product: the new product will allow women spend less than would for their monthly menstrual cycle and still have enough individual sanitary pads to keep them dry and improve their personal hygiene. Idea generation: As the operation manager of company XY, I would initiate a change to achieve increased patronage of the company’s sanitary pad brand. A cloth sanitary pad (see pages 34) could be included in some packs of disposable sanitary pads. This would be put in bigger packs and the contents will be indicated on the pack. The percentage of the switch from the regular pack to the new one would show how much the idea is accepted by the end consumers. To carry this out, specialized machines for the production of cloth sanitary pads will have to be bought as well as materials for the cloth sanitary pads. This means an increase in the cost of production. The price of each sanitary pad will be increased to meet the extra cost of production. In order for these products to attract a great patronage to the increase in their prices, they should be of very good quality. StakeHolder Identification for the Production of Sanitary Pads Stake holders according to Bill, Don and Danny (2005) are â€Å"groups or individuals with whom the organization interacts or has interdependencies† and â€Å"any individual or group who can affect or is affected by the actions, decisions, policies, practices or goals of the organization†. There exist two categories of stakeholders; the internal stakeholders who affect the product and the external stake holders who are affected by the product. Internal stakeholders: The internal stakeholders for the production of sanitary pads include; the project manager and the project staff. Objectives: Project manager; needs to produce sanitary pads that will make consumers switch from the regular full disposable pack to the cloth and disposable pack without an itch and that will attract high patronage in order to cover the cost of production. Project staff; need to produce pads that will be readily available and meet the lead times for sanitary pads. External stakeholders: The external stakeholders include; women and girls who are the end consumers of sanitary pads and the second tier of buyers and the retailers who buy directly from the producers and supply to the consumers and are the first tier of buyers Objectives: Women: the sanitary pads should be of good quality. It should be able to keep them dry for as long as possible and be comfortable to wear. It should be affordable as well, even with the increase. Retailers: the sanitary pads supplied should be accepted by the end users enough to still be highly demanded for even after the retailers have added their profit prices on the products.

What Should You Do If You Have a C Average GPA

What Should You Do If You Have a C Average GPA SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If your grades have been on the lower side in high school, you might be wondering what steps you can take to improve your situation before you appy to college. With a C average, you may run into some trouble in the application process, so you should start taking measures to mitigate these problems now. In this article, I'll go over what a C average means for you and how you can make smart changes to your academic strategies to end up with better prospects for college. What’s a C Average GPA, and How Will It Affect Your Chances for College? If you have a C average, your GPA is a 2.0.This is significantly below the average for high school students, which is a 3.0 or a B average.A GPA that's this low will put you in jeopardy when it comes to college admissions. There are only a couple of schools where your current GPA would make you a competitive applicant. If you’re still an underclassman, you may be able to improve your grades enough to have a better chance at college by the time you apply to college your senior year.If you’re an upperclassman, you're in a more difficult position, but don’t freak out yet! There are a couple of measures you can take to mitigate the impact of a low GPA on your admissions prospects. In the next section, I’ll go over different ways you can improve your chances of college admission based on where you are in your high school career. How Can You Improve Your Chances for College Admission With a C Average GPA? As a freshman or sophomore, there are steps you can take to end up with a better GPA by the time you apply to college. Here are some tips that may get you on the right track: Ask for Extra Help and Extra Credit You need to be proactive about getting help if you’re stuck at a C average. If you’re struggling in any of your classes, let your teacher know as soon as possible. Most teachers will be happy to answer any questions you have about the subject and explain things in a way that’s easier for you to understand. It can be helpful to prepare a list of questions that you have or problems you'd like to go over before you meet with your teacher. This way, you'll be getting the most out of the session. Sometimes all it takes is a slightly different explanation to give you that flash of total understanding. If you clear up these comprehension issues as soon as they emerge, you will do better on tests later. Extra credit is another avenue to consider if you're hoping to improve your grades dramatically. Of course, not all teachers offer extra credit, but if you have the opportunity to earn it, don't hesitate! Even if you don't think you can get extra credit on an assignment, you should ask your teacher about it. I know this feels like you're sucking up, but it will end up being worth it if you can improve your grade by a significant number of points. Learn More Effective Study Habits With a C average, you almost certainly have some fundamental problems in your study methods. It’s important that you’re getting the most out of the time you spend studying. If you’re just reading over the material you need to know, you might not be retaining it in your mind. When you read something over, look away and repeat it to yourself in your head before moving on to make sure you really know it.You should also ask a friend, parent, or sibling to test you after every study session to verify that you’ve learned the information. You may need to extend your study time significantly in order to ensure that you have solid knowledge of the material. In your position, you should also avoid cramming for tests. For a big test, plan out your studying a week in advance so that you can study for an hour a night rather than five hours the night before. You’re more likely to retain information if you learn it gradually over time rather than trying to stuff it in your brain all at once. This will lead to much less stress on test days. Don't try to fit too many knowledge apples in your short term memory basket at once. Some of them are going to fall out! If you fill up the basket gradually, you will digest some of the apples and store them in your deeper long term memory. You'll end up with a manageable basket by the time the test comes around. Avoid Procrastination and Stay Organized As a student with a low GPA, procrastination is your worst enemy. If you have a long-term assignment that’s due in a month or two, you should make a timeline for when you need to finish different components of the project.Aim to complete the most time-consuming parts of the project a week in advance of the due date. This way, you’ll have time to polish your work before you turn it in. You'll also have time to read and reread the directions to ensure that you've included all the right components and have finished them to the best of your ability. An â€Å"editing phase† like this can be the difference between a C quality project and a B or even A quality project. It's also important that you develop strong overall organizational skills so you can stay on top of both short and long term assignments. Make sure that you always mark the start of a new unit in your notebooks so you can easily refer back to the material when you study for tests. You should also have a folder for each class where you can store important papers. Don't just throw them into your backpack and expect to find them later (trust me, I've been there). Get into the habit of writing down your assignments every night in an agenda book so you don't forget about anything. Even if you don't have homework for a certain class, write down anything that you could do to prepare for future assessments. For example, you might decide to review what you've learned over the past week in your math class if you haven't been assigned any problem sets for one night. Extra math!!!!! Woohooooooo!!! Pay Close Attention in Class Being mentally present in your classes is critical if you want to improve your grades. If you listen to your teacher’s lectures and ask questions when you don’t understand something, you will have a much easier time studying for tests later. You’ll find that you already know some of the material just by following along diligently in class. To facilitate this behavior, you should avoid looking at your phone or getting sidetracked by other distractions. The best way to force yourself to commit to this is to sit near the front of the class so you're always held accountable by the teacher. You should shut off your phone in class (or better yet, don't bring it with you at all) so that you're not tempted to check it. For more advice, read my article on how to raise your GPA in high school.Even if you only manage to raise your GPA slightly (say, up to a 2.5 instead of a 2.0), you’ll be a competitive applicant at many more colleges.Don’t let your GPA slip any further! A 2.0 is essentially the lowest high school GPA you can have if you hope to attend a four year college. If you drop down to a 1.8, you won’t be up to the minimum GPA standards at any schools.I only say this to motivate you; as an underclassman you still have time to do much better in your classes if you put in some serious effort! Time to get as serious as this serious(ly cute) cat. If you’re a junior or senior, you unfortunately don’t have much time left to improve your grades. In this case, you should focus on other aspects of your application that can have a positive impact on your chances of admission. Here are some measures you can take to give yourself the best shot at attending college: Work on Improving Your Standardized Test Scores Your SAT and ACT scores will play a significant part in most admissions decisions. At many schools, test scores are given relatively equal weight to GPA in the admissions process. This means that you can greatly improve your chances of attending a four year college if you raise your scores. We have written a ton of articles on our blog about strategies for improving your scores on both the SAT and the ACT.Please use them as a resource! Write a GreatCollege Essay Your college essay is a chance for you to showcase what makes you unique as a student and as a person.Colleges are looking for high achieving students, but they’re also looking for students who will bring enthusiasm and passion for both academic subjects and extracurricular activities to their campuses.Think about the ways in which you will make a positive contribution to the community in college. What makes you special? What are you enthusiastic about? This is information that can help you to stand out in the pool of applicants despite a low GPA. What makes you unique? Try to write an essay that will help you to stand out from the crowd. What Are Your Options for College If Your Grades Don’t Change? With a GPA that’s this low, you will have trouble getting into most colleges.Like I said in the previous section, raising your test scores and writing a great essay can help your chances. However, you’ll still only be looking at the least selective schools. If you still have a shot at raising your GPA, you should start working towards that goal sooner rather than later! You also have the option of going to a community college for your first year of undergrad and then transferring out to a more selective four year college. This can be a really great option if you have a low GPA in high school, but you have to be willing to work hard during your first year of college. If you can commit to that and to going through the transfer application process, this approach will save you tuition money, AND you will end up with a degree from a more competitive college that might not have accepted you right out of high school. Conclusion If you have a C average in high school, you may have a tough time getting into college.A C average translates into a 2.0 GPA, which is far below the national average of a 3.0 for high school students. If you’re a freshman or sophomore, you still have time left to raise your GPA before you apply to college. It’s important that you start adopting better study habits as soon as possible. If you take initiative, you may be able to improve your grades significantly and have a much better chance at attending a four year college. If you’re a junior or senior, it might be too late to raise your GPA. In this case, you should work on improving your standardized test scores and writing the best application essays possible. In the end, if you’re stuck with a C average, you can try applying to some of the least selective four-year colleges or go to community college for your first year of undergrad and then transfer to a more competitive school. Even though your grades are lower than average, you still have a shot at obtaining a good college education. You may be able to make changes before you apply that will dramatically improve your chances of admission.Don’t get discouraged! The Accounting Treatment and Disclosures Related To Three Types of Com Essay

The Accounting Treatment and Disclosures Related To Three Types of Compensation and Other Benefits - Essay Example These services generally have many beneficial impacts on the organization. As such, it is important to reward the employees adequately in the form of compensation and other benefits. The compensation benefits include a set of programs which are aimed at attracting capable employees to a company. The compensation benefits help to motivate the employees to perform better and also help to retain more skills within the organization. A satisfactory compensation will help in reducing the attrition rate in a company and also contribute significantly to human resource management in a business. The three types of compensation benefits considered in this report are share-based compensation which includes stock options and restricted stocks, pension plans and regular base compensation. Share-based compensation is becoming more popular among the local as well as multinational organizations. The benefits of share-based compensation are many. The most noticeable advantage of share-based compensation is that it gives a sense of inclusion to the employees as the share-based compensation is associated with privileges of equity ownership. The main purpose of the share-based compensation benefits is to support the interests of the shareholders, employees as well as the management of the company. If the employees have a stake in the company through the ownership of certain shares, it is highly likely that the employees will perform better to ensure that the sales and profit level of the company is increased. An increase in the profitability and revenue generation of the company would result in an increase in the share prices of the company. If the employees are given share-based compensation benefits, an increase in the share prices would mean benefit for the employee as well. Thus, this acts as a win-win situation for the managers, investors as well as the employees of a business. Share-based compensation is common to both established companies and startup companies.

Gay and Lesbian Rights Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Gay and Lesbian Rights - Assignment Example While homosexuality did not have anything to do with communism, the power of the US was related to gender with homosexuality being seen as a surrender of one’s masculinity (Adam 56). At around this time, there was already the feeling among the political reactionaries that homosexuality would destroy the American society. This led to its repression in federal, state, and local governments across the US with authorities arresting homosexuals in gay bars. This reactionary activity meted out on homosexuals had an immense impact on homosexuals as they were fired and taken to mental institutions by the end of the 40s (Adam 57). In the 50s, gays and lesbians allied themselves to other minorities with the aim of having a liberal society, initially taking a cautious approach with the aim of ensuring survival and a reduction of hostility (Adam 60). The war had opened up increased opportunities at employment for gay people, whereas also allowing them to meet other gay people and experien ce gay culture at port cities when they were deployed. However, the end of the war brought with it a clamor for a return to the original social order that did not have a place for gay people. The tensions that arose from this reactionary attitude led to the rise of a homophile movement, especially among working class women and men who had been demobilized from the army. The most important of these movements was the Mattachine Society in 1951 in LA. The main aim of this society was to unify gays and lesbians who had been isolated from one another, education of all people on the probability of an ethical homosexual community; and assist those gays and lesbians under oppression. However, the movement reversed its objectives under pressure in 1953 to a low-key movement looking for accommodation. The homophile movement was again revamped with the entry of the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) in 1955 (Adam 64). However, it was also more inclined to fighting for accommodation until the terror fr om the reactionaries subsided. By the 1960s, the homophile movement, had become part of the larger social upheaval and was not satisfied with simple accommodation and assimilation (Adam 68). The Beats movement of the 60s gave rise to cultural dissident zones in New York and San Francisco, including gays and lesbians. This increased the boldness of the DOB and Mattachine movements, which expanded to major cities across the US, only to be met with resistance again, especially politically. However, taking a leaf from the Civil Rights Movement, gays, and lesbians also began to call for their acceptance as full equals (Adam 72). In Making History: the Very Mad Scientist: Frank Kameny, the author also discusses the effects of the end of WWII on gays and lesbians, especially after they were fired from government and military positions. One of the people who suffered from this action was Frank Kameny, who grew up in New York before moving to Washington D.C. after completing Ph.D. studies at Harvard. The U.S. Army Map Service soon employed him before being fired in 1957 (Marcus 94). After attempting to get his job back for three years by himself, he finally decided to join up with other gay and lesbian movements. He joined Jack Nichols in 1961 to form the Washington D.C. Mattachine Society, which brought him to the attention of the FBI. Frank was soon to take part in protests, become involved in court cases, confrontations, and a constant subject of FBI surveillance. In 1957, he was called back from an assignment and accused of being gay, which was visible from his frequent visits to gay bars. This resulted in his being served with notice that he was to be fired for being a

God is Pantheistic Essay examples -- Literary Analysis, Epictetus

Epictetus’s god is pantheistic Because his teachings can be interpreted in different ways, Epictetus’s view of god is unclear. It is unclear whether Epictetus’s god is a pantheistic god who is one with the universe or whether his god is a personal god that answers prayers and watches over his people like the god of monotheism. While there is little doubt that Epictetus views god as all powerful and all good, I will argue that his texts also indicate that Epictetus views god as a pantheistic god possessing none of the defining characteristics of a personal god. There is a significant difference between what Epictetus means by being all good and what monotheism defines as all good. What monotheism defines as all good is perfect morals while Epictetus defines the true nature of good as intelligence, knowledge, and right reason (Discourses 8:2). According to Epictetus, the true nature of good cannot be found in irrational creatures such as animals and plants. Rather, it can only be found in what is rational (Discourses 8:3). Only what possesses rationality can have the true nature of good and since the true nature of god is where the true nature of good is, one can only conclude that the true nature of god is rationality (Discourses 8:1). Epictetus’s god does not merely possess these qualities, but he is goodness, he is rationality itself. That is the defining difference between the good of Epictetus’s god and that of a personal god. The texts make it clear that Epictetus sees god as all powerful. He describes god as being the artificer of the universe and that no one could possibly possess power equal to god (Discourses 6:10, 14:11). This could be interpreted as a personification of god because being an â€Å"artificer† and the ab... ...e of ourselves, but simply to preserve ourselves as nature intended (Discourses 8:23). Epictetus’s god is not a caring, personal god as a cursory glance at the texts might have someone believe. While at first glance it may seem as though Epictetus’s god appears to be a personal god, a closer look at the texts reveal that his god is a pantheistic one who is not at all like the personal god of monotheism. His god is one with the universe and the true essence of his god is the rationality of intelligence, right reason, and knowledge while a personal god is a separate entity from the world but cares and watches over from above. Although both Epictetus’s god and the personal god of monotheism are both all good and all powerful, they are so in very different ways. Epictetus’s god is clearly a pantheistic god possessing none of the traits which define a personal god.
